[ubuntu] 3 different pcs, 3 different kernel versions

$

Hi

I have 3 pcs with ubuntu 16.04, they all have different versions of the kernel. ie 4.4.0-75-generic, 4.4.0-134-generic, 4.4.0-143-generic. They all have the software updater active and updating the machines. Why don;t they all have the latest ( 4.4.0-143-generic ) kernel?

Is there a way to force the latest kernel to update?

If I install the latest kernel from synaptic, am I going to brake the pc?

[ubuntu] Files - Other Locations

Folks,

Running Ubuntu 18:04 LTS

Have an issue when I access 'other locations' on my local network. I have an sftp://192.168.1.12/ locations which logs me in to the root location via my ssh credentials. This is fine as this device is used as a media server which I access via the /media directory.

So far so good.

If using the files v3.26.4 manager I then switch to any local folders when I return to my network share in puts me in the 'home' folder and not the 'root'. Can see no way of opening parent folder, no obvious way of entering a filepath.

The only way I can appear to get back is either pressing back button continuously r re-establishing my sftp connection.

Previous version of Ubuntu I could open a location text window which would allow me to enter / but if there is one here I haven't found it.

If anyone has a suggestion appreciate advice.

[lubuntu] Lost restoring grub using boot-repair

$

I have a computer on which a Lubuntu installation was working. Now I get "Reboot and select proper boot device" when I try to boot. I assume that the boot partition got corrupted, so I am trying to use boot-repair to fix the problem. When I click "Recommended repair" I get "Please use this software in a live session". I am using the software in a live session of Knoppix running on a flash drive. I also tried "Separate /boot/efi partition" under "GRUB location" in "Advanced options" because fstab says that is how it was mounted, but I get the same demand about using the software in a live session.

boot-info is here:

http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/sbqP5XcpjH/

I have pretty much no idea what I am doing, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

MATE slow to load panel...

So I have Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and I installed the most recent version of mate 1.22 via this guide:

http://tipsonubuntu.com/2019/03/22/i...4/#prettyPhoto

I have everything setup the way I want it, except that on a startup the panel lags way behind. When I first installed mate it all loaded blisteringly fast. Now the desktop loads fast as usual, but the panel takes longer (5-10 seconds). Any ideas what is causing this lag? I though maybe it was the icon pack I was using so I tried several and the issue remains. Any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Occasionally cors error out of the blue for x seconds

I am building my API with Laravel's Lumen (newest version). My front-end is build with VueJS.

Everything is working perfectly fine, but every now and then out of the blue I receive CORS errors. After x-amount of minutes (or seconds) it will be gone again like nothing ever happened.

I have been searching for error logs and other stuff for days but without results. Could anyone please tell me how I can find out what is wrong?

I am totally clueless at the moment.

Ubuntu 18.04 with Apache2. Lumen (newest) with VueJS (newest).

The error that I am receiving is:

Cross-Origin-aanvraag geblokkeerd: de Same Origin Policy staat het lezen van de externe bron op https://example.com/v1/verify-token niet toe. (Reden: CORS-aanvraag is niet gelukt).

Translated to English:

Cross-Origin-Request blocked. The Same Origin Policy does not allow reading from the external source at {website}. Reason: CORS-request failed.

As said, sometimes I can work for half an hour or so before this error occurs. After a couple of refreshes the error is gone and everything works as intended.

I checked my PHP7.2-FPM log, Apache2 log, Laravel (Lumen) logs but nothing is mentioned anywhere.

I also checked RAM and CPU, compared to when I have this error and when not. No difference. Same for network information with (sudo ifconfig). Both the same no difference.

Does anyone have a clue where to look?

[ubuntu] Issue with 16.04 package files + /etc/apt/sources.list seems to have disappeared?!

Hello,

Over the past few months, I've been getting the red warning icon on my indicator bar telling me that something is wrong with the packages, but after I do sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list and the usual update stuff, it tends to return to normal. However, I do all this stuff around my pretty busy work schedule so am mainly just trying to keep things superficially tidy and keeping the warning messages at bay without ever getting to the root, so to speak.

However, recently it's gotten pretty bad so I thought I'd attempt an upgrade to 18.04. Couldn't do that because I was told that there was a package that required an update (iirc) and it remained so after sudo apt-get update etc. Weird. Anyway, I learnt that it was lutris and I just removed it because I really wanted to get this sorted. So some morning last week I got it all started prepping for 18.04.

Then at about 7pm the same day I was about to pack it up when I noticed behind the dozens of tabs and programs I had started the 18.04 upgrade. I didn't have time to go through with it, so to the "Do you want to proceed with the upgrade?" prompt, I chose N.

I thought that would all be OK, but now it seems something is majorly afoot with my packages.

Specifically, the /etc/apt/sources.list seemed to have disappeared when I tried to do sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list, as I got the message saying that that directory did not exist. I have since pasted in a proper 16.04 packages list, though I wasn't sure if this was really a good idea. It seems to have worked, since I get no error message here though.

I went back to do sudo apt-get update and all appeared to be fine except the end of the process returned a series of warnings followed by this:

E: Unable to parse package file /var/lib/apt/lists/ppa.launchpad.net_knapsu_openxcom_ubuntu_dists_xen ial_main_binary-amd64_Packages (1)
E: Unable to parse package file /var/lib/apt/lists/ppa.launchpad.net_knapsu_openxcom_ubuntu_dists_xen ial_main_binary-i386_Packages (1)

W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
E: The package cache file is corrupted

Out of interest/desperation I also thought I'd try sudo do-release-upgrade but was informed that I should Please install all available updates for your release before upgrading.

When I tried to check the update settings using the GUI, I saw that all Ubuntu Options had been unchecked, and there were numerous seeming duplicated in my Other Software list. I, probably foolishly, checked all the Ubuntu Options boxes and then tried to apply the changes, when I got the message:

Failed to load the package list

This is a serious problem. Try again later. If this problem appears again, please report an error to the developers.

With the details:

It seems kinda self-explanatory, but I've tried to fix this intuitively for a while now and don't seem to be getting anywhere with it, so am hoping that you might be able to help.

I'm not sure if it's relevant, but also when I tried to use (gksudo) nautilus via the terminal I was allowed, but got this message too:

(nautilus:22598): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_dbus_interface_skeleton_unexport: assertion 'interface_->priv->connections != NULL' failed

When I tried (vanilla) nautilus again I got this:

(nautilus:22188): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_dbus_interface_skeleton_unexport: assertion 'interface_->priv->connections != NULL' failed

(nautilus:22188): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_dbus_interface_skeleton_unexport: assertion 'interface_->priv->connections != NULL' failed

(nautilus:22188): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_signal_connect_object: assertion 'G_TYPE_CHECK_INSTANCE (instance)' failed

What's the simplest way to remedy this mess? Is there any way I can do so without having to reinstall Ubuntu?

Thanks!

Should I move my installation to another partition?

Hi,

Given my recent concerns about speed of ubuntu I wondered if it being at the last part of the partition table has anything to do with it? Being slower than I expected?

I did actually try to move it to the front however I couldn't use the cp - a command because it said I couldn't write to the destination partition And I don't see why not because I had just made it while using the ubuntu live disc.

Getting Fastai.structured to import

$

In the following paper there is a some code that employs fastai. I will show the link now:

https://www.analyticsvidhya.com/blog...niques-python/

In it there are some lines that use fastai. The section of python code shows this:

Code:

#create features
from fastai.structured import  add_datepart
add_datepart(new_data, 'Date')
new_data.drop('Elapsed', axis=1, inplace=True)  #elapsed will be the time stamp

Now the line

from fastai.structured import add_datapart

fails. The code would have worked in January of 2019. The part fastai.structured part has since been moved.

The fastai forum said to try this line in place of above line:

from fastai.tabular import add_datepart

that failed also. I can provide the output when each syntax (fastai.structured and fastai.tabular) is used.

It is just more code, trust me both fail.

I cannot find the answer. Things have changed since January 2019, but I am not sure how.

Anyway, what code will fix this error.

Any help appreciated.

Respectfully,

LR

Host freeze if there isn't enough RAM available

Hello,
Every time I start a VM, I have to make sure that the amount of free RAM is at least equal to the VM allocated RAM. If it doesn't, the host system freezes and I have to do a hard reset. So, I usually have to close some windows before launching the VM, in order to free up some RAM. Sometimes, I forget to do that and the system freezes. That's annoying.
Is there anything I can do to solve that?

[ubuntu] AnyConnect package on the secure gateway could not be located

Hi, using Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS (4.4.0-67-generic, x86_64) I try to connect to a server with Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client version 4.6.02074 and I get the error:

Code:

The AnyConnect package on the secure gateway could not be located. You may be experiencing network connectivity issues. Please try connecting again.
What's the problem? How should I solve it?

[ubuntu] I'm getting SQUASHFS and print_req errors when restarting after installation

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 16.04 on my computer (dualboot with Win10), but when I see "installation is complete, restart your device" message, I click on restart and I get SQUASHFS and print_req errors and ubuntu won't start up.

What I did when trying to install Ubuntu;
-Burned ISO file to 2 different USBs, incase if problem was causing by one of them (got same result)
-Closed Fast boot and secure boot
-Opened CSM thingy
-Booted from non-UEFI usb boot option
-Couldn't close USB legacy mode because my computer resisted booting from USB when it's closed
-Deselected every other boot option but non-UEFI USB option from BIOS menu
-Ubuntu won't showup in BIOS Boot options menu, but when I try to install it again, installer says "Ubuntu 16.04 detected on your computer" and suggests me to install Ubuntu 16.04 alongside with ubuntu 16.04

Errors;
SQUASHFS error: unable to read
->fragment cache entry
-> page, block *some hexadecimal numbers*
print_req_error: I/O error, devloop0, sector *some decimal numbers*

I need to install ubuntu 16.04 so there is no point to try any other version but any suggestion is appreciated.

I was using wifi network before and then wasn't home for week and it stopped detecting it when I came back. Connecting through hidden networks fails. It works on windows and android. It has the same settings.
Connecting to another wifi works.

[ubuntu] Web click on lid close

$

When I close my laptop lid then open it after a while, over 50% of the time if I have a web page displayed when the lid is closed, a new web page will be displayed when I log back in. I thought it may have been my mouse which is a Logitech M510 wireless mouse. I removed the mouse USB dongle prior to closing the lid this last time and when I logged back in, I still had a new web page open from when I closed the lid. The new pages appear to be from links on the web page on the browser tab that was open when the lid was closed. If I have a video paused displaying on the web page of the tab open when I close the lid, the video will play for a few seconds until the machine goes to sleep. This should not be a virus as it is the third installation of Ubuntu (second from a new ISO) on this laptop. I know it happens with Chrome browser but am unsure if it happens with Firefox.

Any ideas how to cure this? I don't want to open my laptop one day to find I inadvertently purchased lingerie on a popular auction website. I would find that purchase hard to explain to my wife. Especially if it were the incorrect size.

Share zfs-dataset via nfs stopped working

I rebuilt my server last week, setup a zfs pool, shared a few datasets, today I had to reboot a server that was connected to the storage server via NFS and after this it cant mount the NFS shares from the storage server.
This is the error I get:
mount.nfs: requested NFS version or transport protocol is not supported

First I thought hey it is the wrong NFS version, so I tried -t nfs4 then I get access denied...

And on the storage server is see this when I take a service status on the NFS-server:
exportfs: Failed to stat /zfspool/media: No such file or directory

I have zfs set sharenfs for this dataset.

So here's my exports file:
/zfspool/media 10.20.1.0/24(rw,sync,no_subtree_check)

What am I doing wrong?
Atm, I feel like I am all over the place... please help!

Hi folks,

I scanned an old super 8mm film into an MP4 file. The film runs at 18fps and I need to interpolate frames to reach 30fps for burning a DVD. I understand that Mencoder can do the job. Can someone please say what is the command line to do that job?

Thanks

Whenever I try to change directory it tells me that the directory doesn't exist, even when I have simply typed cd and then dragged the folder into the terminal and removed the apostrophes it still believes that the directory doesn't exist. This also happens when I try to run a python script. Below I have pasted the console output.
