Running Ubuntu 18.04 on a new laptop...been having problems backing up to an external hard drive...have a Seagate 4TB and backup is extremely slow. I've never had a problem backing up with previous EHDs. What could be wrong? Searching online unfortunately gets little about backup and primarily information about putting Ubuntu on an external drive :(

[kubuntu] Lenovo Thinkpad P52 / Make Hybrid and Discrete only work
Hi,
I'm trying to make (K)Ubuntu work with both, Hybrid and Discrete graphics configs, on my Lenovo P52 (i7-8850H, Nvidia Quadro P3200, 32GB RAM)
First off, whichever config I choose while installing Kubuntu works. If I install with Discrete only, it works. But Hybrid does not work. If I install with Hybrid, Hybrid works but Discrete only not.
As far as I know I need to use the Discrete only config if I want to use the Thunderbolt 3 dock (or its video outputs, to be exact).
But I also need to work with this Laptop while travelling or in Uni, that means I don't have access to a power socket all the time and Discrete only drains the battery very quickly (and makes your upper legs burn!)
What would be the way to go?
I don't have any previous experience with Linux on hybrid configurations, any help is greatly appreciated!

A Unique PlayOnLinux Trick
My laptop, before its hard drive gave out after a year of faithful usage, ran Ubuntu Studio 19.04. I had a 16GB flash drive manufactured by Onn. I wanted to install Dolphin Portable, for Windows, on tte flash drive. I did it successfully.
For anyone who wants to install any portable Windows prograb on a flash drive via PlayOnLinux, here's the method I used:
Download the .paf.exe file and use PlayOnLinux to run the installer like usual. Format the flash drive with the FAT file system, check what PlayOnLinux uses as your flash drive's drive letter on the virtual drive (for me, it was E) and set PlayOnLinux to install the portable app to that drive. Once that's done, the program should be properly installed on the flash drive in a way that will allow it to run on Windows.

Looking for Launch Pad for Seniors / Elderly
Hello,
I am looking for a Launch Pad type App or Theme that will let me isolate a few icons. Something that doesn't disappear or go away.
My mother is in her 80s and although has been using a PC for 20 years, she keeps losing or hiding her email and social media pages.
There are a few computer makers out there that have all-in-one PCs with this feature, I am thinking they are just revised Linux boxes.
I already have a capable PC.
Thank you.

Is Ubuntu safe?
Mint is not crappy. But it's also not Windows, so it doesn't behave like Windows. It can be updated. It can be restarted. Of course Mint can be used to connect to the internet. Mint's file extensions are no different than any other Linux-based OS. It's a different operating system from Windows so you have to use it as it is designed -- which is different that Windows.
The "problems" you described are pretty vague. Did you ask anyone about them?
Is it safe? That's a pretty vague question. Safer than Windows if used correctly. But no OS is totally safe if not used safely.
Vague questions are difficult, if not impossible, to answer.

[ubuntu] partition recoverable? or lost - Aomei partition manager
I have/had a dual boot with an unmovable/unshrinkable (by normal methods) Windows partition. I wanted to take most of the Windows partition, which was seldom used and reallocate it to the ext4 Ubuntu partition. I used freeware called Aomei partition manager, advertised as being specifically tailored to get around the unmovable partitions pre-loaded Windows machines come with. I thought there was a chance I might screw up the Windows partition I was shrinking, but that would ok. Instead, I have the shrunk partition that Windows is/was on and the two ext4 partitions (Ubuntu and a backup partition) merged together as "unallocated space". The Aomei program seems to have taken the two partitions it could not read and, without prompts/warning or any message, just lumped them together.
Right now I only have a grub prompt on boot, which I cannot do anything with afaik. I probably am screwed with both my system and its backups gone. Reloading both the Windows and Ubuntu OSes would be fine, but if that backups partition got wiped - that is a huge loss.
I am hoping someone there can correct me on that and advise how to recover my data.
thank you

Would Like to Try new windows manager CTWM
Hello all,
I am new to Ubuntu and have been looking around for a nice windows manager to use that I can customize to look the way I want it to look. So far I have come across CTWM and I really like it, however after installing it (using sudo apt install ctwm) and logging off, I am unable to switch sessions to use CTWM.
Am I doing something wrong? Or is there another way that I have to switch window mangers that I am unaware about? I am so confused...

How to dual boot Windows on Ubuntu?
Hello all, I have just recently built a PC, however as I had not bought windows yet, I decided to use Ubuntu as my primary OS first. Now that I have bought windows, does anyone know how I can dual foot from the Ubuntu side (i.e. create a partition) to install windows onto my PC?
I have tried my best to google on this issue however I keep getting tutorials on how to dual boot ubuntu on windows which is the opposite of what I am trying to do....
Thanks all in advance for the responses.

nvidia-driver on 1910 install not the recommended driver
Maybe this is something that will be fixed in the release candidate.
I now have kubuntu1910 on my computer after running 'sudo do-release-upgrade -d' in kubuntu1904.
The upgrade appeared to progress flawlessly, though this is not the release candidate.
However, I was looking at the drivers for my PC and noticed that nvideo-driver-430 had been installed, even though in the list -435 was the recommended driver.
Trying to switch to the recommended driver appeared to be impossible.
So, after reading around, I tried purging driver-430, rebooting and then installing driver-435.
I was successful in this but a file libnvidia-compute-430:amd64 still remained, I purged this and as far as I can see all is now well.
I would report this as a bug but the intricacy of doing so held me back, I post it here in the hope that it will be noticed.
This is not a request for help, just a note to point out that during a do-release-upgrade the installation of nvidia driver is not progressing as it should.
If more info about my system and/or method would help then just ask.

Every some weeks, the notebook freezes, mouse pointer does not move, no reaction, only reboot by pressing long time the power button helps.
Now I check system monitor when ever I see a severe slow down.
In this case, in system monitor Processes, Zeitgeist shows always on top of the memory users with 1.4 GB, Resources shoes nearly no available RAM.
When I kill Zeitgeist, system monitor shows at Resources 1.4 GB less RAM usage and all works fine again.
