[all variants] Oracle VBox repos for Focal - Use eoan repo instead.

$

I have been trying to add the VBox repos from Oracle as shown in the info at Debian-based Linux distributions section at https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads.

Currently there are no repos for focal so it is necessary at the moment to add the line for 19.10 to your sources.list file , ie, deb [arch=amd64] https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian eoan contrib, using eoan instead of focal.

It is working just as it should for the time being in 20.04, and I will upgrade the repo information as soon as Oracle add a repo for focal.

[ubuntu] Startup problem - busybox v1.30.0 initramfs

Hello,

I have been using Ubuntu 20.04 LTS since 04/24/2020, since that time my system had twice the following error when restarting (busybox v1.30.0 initramfs) the first time I reinstalled the system from scratch, because I chose a better choice. Today, the error occurred again, instead of reinstalling, I chose to correct the error with the following command (fsck -y dev / sda2). I did some checks to rule out a problem on the hard drive and, according to the report, everything is fine, in this case, I believe it may be a small bug in the system.

NOTE: The error was repeated after I tried to copy a file to the pendrive (to no avail), I ejected the pendrivve and restarted the system at the time the error occurred.

[ubuntu_mate] Touchpad functionality partially broken after suspend

Hey,

I'm experiencing this on Ubuntu MATE 20.04 currently, but have also seen this on Kubuntu 20.04 & Xubuntu 20.04 on previous installs/from live USB.

Multi-touch functionality works perfectly after a reboot: two-finger & three finger right-click/middle-click, plus two-finger scrolling both vertically and horizontally. I configured this with the built-in Ubuntu MATE Mouse Preferences dialog.

If I suspend the laptop, at least some of this functionality stops working. Most of the time, two/three-finger click only works on the right-hand side of the touchpad. Sometimes two/three-finger click doesn't work at all. Two-finger scroll also sometimes stops working, or works but less reliably. I can reproduce this issue every time I reboot and then suspend/wake.

I'm using a Thinkpad x240 (so no physical buttons :().

Hi,

I have just upgraded to 20.04 from 18.04, and I have a wifi problem: wifi starts ok after boot, but it is unstable, and I will eventually get the following message:
"Activation of Network Connection Failed"

I have found from an other thread a script to help the diagnostic: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=370108 (accessed from Jeremy21 signature)

Here are the results of running the script on my setup:

I would like to buy Nvidia new GTX graphic card as I started to regret to have an APU that comes with Vega 11 graphics. I really need help as sometimes its very annoying.

Trying to 'burn' disc with 20.04...

Hi.
Downloaded 20.04 . It is in the 'downloaded' folder, shows being 2.5GB

Ran "echo "e5b72e9cfe20988991c9cd87bde43c0b691e3b67b01f76d23 f8150615883ce11 *ubuntu-20.04-desktop-amd64.iso" | shasum -a 256 --check"
to verify file health as suggested at the download site ----> https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop/...itecture=amd64

Result is :

externet@externet-Presario-CQ57-Notebook-PC:~$ echo "e5b72e9cfe20988991c9cd87bde43c0b691e3b67b01f76d23 f8150615883ce11 *ubuntu-20.04-desktop-amd64.iso" | shasum -a 256 --check
shasum: ubuntu-20.04-desktop-amd64.iso:
ubuntu-20.04-desktop-amd64.iso: FAILED open or read
shasum: WARNING: 1 listed file could not be read
externet@externet-Presario-CQ57-Notebook-PC:~$

What went wrong ? How big is the .iso file supposed to be ? Needs to be a DVD, not CD, right ? What if Intel64 instead of AMD64 ? They have not corrected that yet ?

Do I 'burn' the .iso or extracted files ?

Tivo software on ubuntu 20.04 or any linux, help?

$

hi,

My Tivo box is acting up and has a load of stuff that I have not seen yet. I think it is a problem on my providers side but in any case, they are saying that I have to do a factory reset.

I was looking using kmttg to temporary transfer to spare HDD, then re-upload to the Tivo after reset.

But I'm having a major problem even getting kmttg to launch.

kmttg needs oracle java 1.8 and 1.8 only, I think I have worked out that Java 8 is 1.8. But I get an UncaughtExceptionHandler error when launching.

I know this is not a kmttg support forum but there does not seem to be an active forum where anyone even responds, so I thought I'd give it a try on the ubuntu multimedia forum, maybe someone uses kmttg and could help, I would be extremely grateful if someone could help?

I don't understand why no one has done a youtube video on how to get this app working, which is a real shame as it looks awesome.

Failing that anyone know an easy-ish alternative to use, preferably on ubuntu but at this point I'd settle for Windows or Mac. really needs to free but I might pay for an app that works if it was cheap-ish even then I don't really have the money.

Many thx to anyone who has any suggestions.

Only noticed this the past week or so.

I'm running 19.10 (fully updated), and the calculator is installed as a snap.

If I try to launch calculator, nothing happens. From the terminal, I get:

Code:

/snap/gnome-calculator/730/usr/bin/gnome-calculator: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-3.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
How can I fix this?

Thanks

I want to record audio output from a single application. I know I can do this by creating a null-sink and recording the monitor but is there a way to record application audio without having to set up a virtual sink and loopback?

[ubuntu] Cisco AM10 wifi adapter not working on Ubuntu 20.04

$

I booted up the liveUSB with Ubuntu 20.04 on my desktop with a Cisco AM10 USB wifi adapter plugged in. But looks like the wifi adapter is not detected.

Its weird since I previously had 18.04 running on this machine, and I was using this AM10 USB adapter. To confirm I also booted a liveUSB with 18.04.1 and it clearly detects the AM10 as a wifi adapter and is able to connect to my wireless network.

Anyone know if Ubuntu has removed support for this wifi adapter? Anyone any ideas?

[kubuntu] No grub menu after Boot Repair

$

Hello guys&gals,

I'm afraid that I can't find an answer online for this situation I encountered.

Initial setup: Ubuntu 18.04, Windows 10, dual boot, grub menu with Ubuntu, Advanced, Windows as options. One Ubuntu boot partition, one root. UEFI system.

Repartitioned the drive to get rid of the separate boot partition because I hate having to clean it up all the time due to it being small.

I have restored a Kubuntu 20.04 backup (fsarchiver) from another laptop to avoid setting/installing everything from scratch. Changed partition UUID and fstab UUID and hostname.

Ran Boot Repair from a Lubuntu 18.04 usb stick.

In BIOS/UEFI I have ubuntu first, then windows, as boot options. They both run fine, I can get in both OSes via BIOS menu.

But with the "ubuntu" boot option I was expecting to be greeted by the familiar default 10 seconds waiting Grub menu, which I don't see at all.

Instead the screen is black, and after some seconds (possibly 10, but it's hard to say) Kubuntu starts. I want the grub menu back, and nothing I've tried helped. Sorry, but I can't recall all the stuff I attempted. Played around with the grub resolution, hidden timeout option etc. Nothing worked, though I may have done it wrong. To know the correct resolutions I would need access to Grub, and I don't have it.

If anybody could point me in the right direction, I would be really grateful. Thanks!

Unknown IP connections

Hey,

Sorry if this is completely expected behaviour.

Upon a fresh install of transmission-daemon from Ubuntu repository, transmission will establish numerous (60+) outgoing connections to servers across the world.

No torrents have been added and I cannot understand why on earth that many servers are needed for telemetry.

A sample of the connections are as such:

udp ubuntu 51413 173.212.202.22 51459
udp ubuntu 51413 107.242.124.37 32992
udp ubuntu 51413 62.210.81.215 51413
udp ubuntu 51413 219.79.69.147 6881
udp ubuntu 51413 79.161.66.164 44558
udp ubuntu 51413 175.213.251.5 32205
udp ubuntu 51413 187.39.253.3 40952
udp ubuntu 51413 109.120.8.208 6881
udp ubuntu 51413 87.149.245.172 6881
udp ubuntu 51413 5.39.226.188 59777
udp ubuntu 51413 89.103.9.107 49643
udp ubuntu 51413 107.242.124.37 32992
udp ubuntu 51413 121.165.57.113 61098

I'm sure this is most likely legitimate behaviour but thought I would check. The other alternative is pretty crazy to think of.

Kind regards,
Tom

[kubuntu] Cannot install Kubuntu on VirtualBox

Hey I am trying to install Kubuntu for the first time on VirtualBox 6.1.6. I have installed Kali Linux and Windows 7 on VirtualBox with no problem but when I try to install Kubuntu 20.04, the screen turns on with the Kubuntu logo and stays like that forever. When I try to install Kubuntu 19.10, it acts as though it doesn't sense the ISO file and displays a blank screen with a blinking cursor that doesn't respond to anything. In both instances it is running with 6gb of ram, 2 cores, and 64mb of video memory. The downloads are from the official Kubuntu site. I have scoured the web and found nothing so if someone has some suggestions I would much appreciate it. My friend has dual booted Kubuntu 20.04 from the official site with no problem, just a note.

Clementine thrashes my disk on Kubuntu 20.04

$

I installed Kubuntu 20.04 as soon as it became official. I set up Clementine as my music player, and installed all the Studio tools.

I have all my music on an external SSD attached through a "toaster", external dock with space for 2 drives as well as extra card and USB ports. It worked fine the first time I used it (which, incidentally, was before I installed the Studio tools).

This morning I tried to play something and it just thrashed the heck out of the SSD, with more notifications than I could keep up with and, eventually, it said that my disk was empty. I booted to another distro (I have 6 on this machine), pulled the drive out of the toaster, and ran my backups. As soon as I pulled the other drive, the drive with my music on it showed up again with all the files. I took the opportunity to make sure my other backup drive was up to date, and tried again. Same thing. It works fine in Mint 19.3, OpenMandria Lx 4.1, Bodhi 5.1.0, and I didn't try either of the other two. It's either a Clementine issue or a Kubuntu 20.04 issue, I'm not sure which (I don't use Clementine on my other distros).

Ay help would be appreciated.

[ubuntu] I broke Ubuntu, I want to backup my data and reinstall it.

Hey everybody! ):P

I love Ubuntu, started using it in December. I was trying to use some terminal commands to resolve an issue with Docker, and I think that's what led to Ubuntu failing to boot thereafter.

(The main question is: How do I recover my data?)

Here are the commands I put in (with the link where I got them):

I made my user's .docker folder accessible without sudo like so: sudo chgrp -hR docker ~/.docker && sudo chown -R myuser ~/.docker. the chgrp didn't seem to help though, so probably I should only recommend the chown step. – Birchlabs Jul 28 '17 at 11:24

https://askubuntu.com/questions/4775...r-without-sudo

So I'd like to start ubuntu in recovery mode, save my data to a hard drive, and then remove and reinstall ubuntu in that partition of my hard drive.

The first step is the one I'm least sure about: How do I recover all my data?
