Ubuntu 20.04 - Nvidia fan / overclock control issue (gpu mining rig)

$

Afternoon. I have installed Ubuntu 20.04 on this rig multiple times today due to screwing various parts up when trying to enable fan and overclock controls on my gpu's. I now think I've yet again screwed something up with xorg so in the process of a clean fresh reinstall and looking for some guidance on my next steps. What I have is a rig of 4 gpu's and it's running off the onboard video from the intel cpu. After the clean install it is great to see it installs the nvidia drivers correctly and when I do a nvidia-smi all looks well. In the past my next step was to do a sudo nvidia-xconfig -a -cool-bits -28 and this is where my problem arises. After doing this step I can no longer boot. It'll stop at a blank screen with Ubuntu written at the bottom and nothing else. Control + Alt + F2 does nothing. And on this first install I forgot to setup SSH so well, had to reload. 2nd time around I installed both XRDP (so I can remote locally with windows remote desktop) and I also added SSH as a backup. I read that I needed to run nvidia-settings and go to x config and save the configuration. Well problem arose with this. All that shows up is at first 3 options to choose. Power Mode. Nvidia On Demand or Intel power saver (can't recall exactly the wording). I choose Nvidia On Demand and rebooted. Then going into nvidia-settings I now see what I am familiar with, however still no nvidia x configuration screen. All I have is my 4 gpus with their thermal, power and a profile option to save and then the screen again to choose from the 3 original options (power, nvidia on demand, intel).

So this time I ran sudo nvidia-xconfig -a -cool-bits -28 again so it created a config file for me. Made a backup of the file. And then sudo nano to edit the original file and tried to make changes to mimic what a default file would look like (had I just done sudo nvidia-xconfig with no options, the output that gives). And after reboot well, same issue. Blank screen with just Ubuntu at the bottom. And Control Alt F2 does nothing. So tried SSH and that worked. Great. So did a rm over the file rebooted, and tried again. I read in another forum that I could create a folder within X11 named xorg.conf.d and then create a conf file like 28-coolbits-conf and then the following:
Section "Device" Identifier "Device0" Option "Coolbits" "28" EndSection

Tried this, back to blank screen. Edited this file thru SSH to -28 thinking maybe I needed that hyphen and well still not working.

So my question is how can I enable fan control and overclocking abilities on nvidia gpu's now?

Thanks

Updatable Ubuntu Server Live Installer

Joshua Powers writes that the Ubuntu Server Live installer gives a streamlined installation experience; with the 'live' installer able to refresh itself during the 'live' session. Joshua has a look at this feature in this article with a couple of screens shown.

Ubuntu Advantage Offerings in 20.04 LTS

Joshua Powers tells us that Ubuntu is the most popular distro and provides some of the reasons. Many are not subscribing to Ubuntu Advantage (UA), that for many is available for free, to take advantage of its offerings. A new user experience is provided with Ubuntu 20.04 that allows all UA features with a single token. Joshua outlines how easy it is to sign up to UA and then attach a machine to utilize UA.

Focal: no microphone in chromium

I can't get my microphone to work in Chromium under Xubuntu 20.04 Focal. I had a similar problem under Xubuntu 19.10 Eoan but was able to fix it by adding the audio-record permission to the chromium snap via:

Code:

snap connect chromium:audio-record :audio-record
However, this doesn't solve the problem under Focal. I see that there is an additional pulse-audio "plug" listed when I run "snap connections" which wasn't present in Eoan, so I tried connecting that as well, but still no sound.

Does anyone else have this problem and more importantly does anyone have a solution? I want to use "Jitsi Meet" (https://meet.jit.si) for video conferencing, and it doesn't (yet) work very well in Firefox so I want to use Chromium for this.

I have been researching and trying for a year to get my epson 3170 scanner to work with any scanner program in ubuntu 18.04. I can't seem to find the answer. I have tried:

These are some of the things I've tried with no luck. Skanlite sees the scanner but gives an Invalid argument error. I've tried image scan, simple scan, Vuescan, and Xsane as well. None work. I need help, please.

duct tape raid: on how i am breaking all the things in all the wrong ways

$
0
0
Some background: I have built many raids. I have learned to love mdadm and distrust hardware. I need some local backup on one of my servers and it has grown beyond single external hard drives into the tens of TB. The server that I have only has 2.5" bays, and I like the idea of being able to connect this cheap local storage to another computer in the event of a failure of the server.

So.

I looked at NASes. I reminded myself that I don't trust hardware. External NAS situations typically have a single proprietary power supply for example and/or a single proprietary SAS/esata card. In my previous life I would have just built out three complete network connected servers and ran Ceph with 10gig. But now I have zero budget. What was the most minimal while fast connection I could get?

External hard drives each have their own power supply. They already have a high bandwidth low-ish latency general purpose connection--USB 3. What if I just soft-raid-sixed a bunch of 10TB external drives and got a USB 3.1 gen2 card. Looks like Highpoint makes a card: https://highpoint-tech.com/USA_new/s...a-overview.htm. I've used highpoint! They make decent stuff!

You can probably see where this trainwreck is going.

I `dd if=/dev/zero` the first few hundred gigs of each drive. I

Code:

sudo mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md1 --level=6 --raid-devices=6 /dev/sda /dev/sdh /dev/sdi /dev/sdj /dev/sdk /dev/sdl
A day later; success! I have a /dev/md1! I

Code:

sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/md1
Code:

sudo mount /dev/md1 /media/external
Success! I

Code:

dd if=/dev/urandom of=/tmp/noise.img
For about 10GB. And I

Code:

time cp /tmp/noise.img /media/external/noise.img
back and forth. It's maxing out my boot SSD! 450MB/s both ways! Stoked!

So.

I start some reliability testing. I unplug one drive. I replug. I

Code:

sudo mdadm /dev/md1 --re-add /dev/sda
Success!

I reboot. This is where things start going down hill. I do a few more reboots combined with various pokery and futzing.

Some things I have encountered through experimentation.

1. I cannot get en entry in /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf to assign a /dev/md# across a reboot. The array always appears as md127 (the default for one unassigned). I have tried

Code:

ARRAY /dev/md/computername:1 metadata=1.2 name=computername:1 UUID=${whatRULookinAt}
ARRAY /dev/md/1 metadata=1.2 name=computername:1 UUID=${whatRULookinAt}
ARRAY /dev/md1 metadata=1.2 name=computername:1 UUID=${whatRULookinAt}

It does however mount fine using the linked dev name like
Code:

sudo mount /dev/md/computername:1 /media/external
Do I fail to get a /dev/md1 assignment because they are USB drives and taking too long to start or something similar? From what I had read on the internet prior to getting started, I should be fine with mdadm-ing USB drives as long as _they're all_ USB drives?

2. Once mounted, the drives are constantly, rhythmically active. Like a heartbeat of armatures about once per second. Nothing that I'm running in userspace is accessing them. Nothing that I have touched with my knowlege elsewhere is. After a reboot and prior to mounting the md, they are inactive and quiet.

Ideas as to why?

3. The individual drive UUIDs (from gdisk -l) of the drives change across reboots (thankfully the array UUID does not). I'll be operating this computer remotely and it's very important that if a drive dies that I can have the person present identify the failed drive to remove it. Changing UUIDs across reboots makes it extremely difficult to identify drives over the phone...

I'm wondering if maybe I partition the drives prior to raiding them might eliminate this issue? Ideas?

Anyway, fun times. Many thanks to anybody that made it this far. No, I don't have a soundcloud.

Hello first time poster and also Ubuntu noob. Some help would be greatly appreciated.

When I am next to my router I get around 40mbps speed, but when I go to another room my speed fluctuates frequently. It ranges from less than 1mbps to 10mbps. Could it be fixed with a terminal command regarding wifi strenght?

I also tried installing drivers as explained in the sticky thread but I get no output when I enter
Code:

lspci -nn -d 14e4:
The following codes were succesfully ran as well:
Code:

sudo apt update
sudo apt dist-upgrade

[ubuntu] No sound after upgrading from 18.04 LTS to 20.04 LTS

$

I didn’t wait for the stable version of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and upgraded my 18.04 LTS version using this command
Code:

update-manager -c -d

I was aware I was doing an upgrade to developer version, anyway I decided to upgrade my OS.
The upgrade had ended, I didn’t notice any crucial things during the process.
The new system has one failure, there is no sound after booting, the only option for sound setting is a “dummy output”.
A temporary solution for this exists, I just need to execute this command: (I’ve found it in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...61/comments/58)
Code:

pulseaudio -k && sudo alsa force-reload

After executing this command the sound is working for a whole session.
My question is:
Is there any stable solution for my problem or should I wait for the stable version of 20.04 which supposedly will be released in July this year?

Disabling touchpad buttons while keeping the "tap to click" function

$

Hello. I have this problem where my board is cracked and this causes my touchpads buttons to randomly click when I move the laptop. I tried to use xinput commands in order to disable the physical buttons, while keeping the pointer and scroll functions of the touchpad.

However, I haven't been able to figure out which are the buttons to disable. When I disable the button 1 of the touchpad, it causes both the "left click" and the "tap to click" on the touchpad to not work. Disabling other numbers seem to do nothing. What are your suggestions in this case, so that I can disable the clicking buttons on the touchpad while keeping it for pointing, scrolling, single and double clicking? Thank you.

Here I have given the information from my terminal:

[ubuntu] New Ubuntu 20.04 installation stuck after login

Hello everyone!

I tried searching but couldn't find anything to solve this issue.

I tried several times to install Ubuntu 20.04 using the "Ubuntu" option, but it always was getting stuck in the filesystem check at 0% in the beginning of the installation. Trying to hit Ctrl+c did nothing.

I could finally install it using the option "Ubuntu (safe graphics)" option. BUT, after installation, it took a long time to start, around 5 - 10 minutes - It was installed in a SSD drive. The login screen finally was presented, but after typing my user and password, the UI is stuck. It's only a purple screen with the mouse pointer.

IMG_20200504_191718.jpg

Tried several times and the result is always the same: long time to start and the mouse in a purple screen.
Tried reinstalling it and the same issue happens.

Anyone knows what may be happening?

My laptop is a Dell Inpiron 15 gaming with core I7, 16 GB RAM and nVidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

I had the same issue with Ubuntu 19.04 and this was the reason to give up using Ubuntu in the past. I just couldn't find a solution for that.

Thank you very much in advance!

Older versions of Lubuntu had an easily selected CPU temperature widget for the panel.

Is there an installable panel CPU temp widget for the Lubuntu 20.04 panel?

Appearance option Show On not working in 20.04

Hello,

I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 and yesterday I decided to check the Settings > Appearance > Show on option.

I use two monitors. Everything was OK until I decided to see how it would look if I had the dock in "All Displays".

Of course I didn't like it and now it is impossible to revert back to one display only.

It doesn't matter which display I chose back, the dock is always on both monitors. I can change the option, leave and come back and the "All Displays" is always active.

Is there a way to revert back or use the terminal to force one of the options?

Thanks!

ARJ unable to accept password (command "g")

File Roller crashes with very large number of files so I use arj with bash. Problem is as follows eg:
alistair@alsE590:~$ arj a -r -gmypass dropbox_d5m5y20.arj Dropbox/*
which creates arc with password of mypass; but when I go to extract and enter the password, its not accepted and repeats password request.
so I make same arc with this command:
alistair@alsE590:~$ arj a -r -g? dropbox_d5m5y20.arj Dropbox/*^C

which prompts for the password before build but even so, I still get the continuous request for wrong password.

Any ideas?
