Hello Everyone,

I switched to Ubuntu just yesterday, because i saw you can create minecraft servers there. Problem isy my Keyboard doesn't work. The thing is, when im in bios it works. But as soon as i boot into Ubuntu, the keyboard doesnt work, i use an external keyboard to type on my laptop now. Tbh i didnt knwo what to do and i asked chatgpt. Turns out my Laptop is stuck in "tablet-mode", because id from chassis type or smt is "10" knstead of "11", i tried everything from changing the grub settings, and creating something with nano and chassis cpid or something. Im relatively new to Linux on desktop so help would be really nice. Let me know what You need to firther examine my problem.

I have a Fujitsu Lifebook E559.
Let me know if you need all the specs and what codes you ned from my PC.

Edit:
I dont know why, but enabling secure boot in the BIOS seems to have fixed the issue?

Wireless internet, turn on PC via wifi

I have a rather power hungry PC connected to the internet via wifi.
Being far away I would like to remotely turn it on via wifi like I could when I had a wired connection.
Part of the solution could be a little Raspberry Pi Zero W I have constantly running nearby. It could be connected to the PC via USB.
But how do I do it?
Thanks in advance for any tip.

[ubuntu] Ubuntu fail to boot

Hello, I shutdown my server last week and try to boot after one day, but it failed to boot and kept reporting "watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#46 stuck for 23s! [irq/473-nvidia:1778]", and then stuck at "A start job is running for ...(various jobs)", I followed some advices from Internet and tried to append parameter "nomodeset" to /etc/default/grub, but it didn't work. Can anyone help me?

How to parallel download in Ubuntu?

Hello folks I am a user who is coming over from Arch Linux. pacman has parallel downloads builtin, which can be activated by editing the "ParallelDownloads" line in /etc/pacman.conf. Does apt have a similar feature right out of the box? If not, is there a script/hack that enables parallel downloading?

Install Ubuntu 24.04 on MacBook Air 6.2 with Intel CPU -> Hard disk not visible

Hello everyone.

As there are no more updates from Apple for my old MacBook Air, I would like to install Ubuntu as the only OS on it.

I have created a USB stick with Ubuntu and can start the installation with it. However, when partitioning, only the stick and not the hard disk is shown as a device. I have tried various constellations in the MacOS partitioning tool, but so far without success.

The entire hard disk can be used for Ubuntu. I don't need any data or the old MacOS.

The FAQ here in the forum says something about an "unjurnaled" file system. However, this is not available for selection in the tool.

What can I do?
Thank you!

[SOLVED] Broken Docker

Running server 22.04.4 LTS. After the recent docker update, I can no longer access any of my containers.

The two containers that I am running I access via a web page, that does not work.

docker container ls -a has a status of Exited (128) 16 hours ago for both containers

I'm guessing the last update broke something

Enable 'beta' in launchpad graphics PPA?

I currently use the ppa for nvidia drivers
https://launchpad.net/~graphics-driv...ive/ubuntu/ppa

However, sometimes I want to try one of the 'beta' or 'new feature' branch of the drivers. Is there a way to configure or change the PPA to allow it to get newer versions (beta).
My only alternative right now is to manually install the driver, which I don't like to do. I prefer going through the PPA.

The PPA is currently added as:

Thunderbird 115.12.2 : Can't access my folders

Hi,
as it says in the title. I've just upgraded Thunderbird to 115.12.2, and now I can't access the folders.
To be precise : Thunderbird appears to works (the number of unread messages is shown as it should), but I see neither headers nor mail content and a right click on any of the folders doesn't open a contextual menu.

What to do now ?

Thanks

[lubuntu] Accidentally had to cancel mantic minotaur update, now software updater won't work.

So the mantic minotaur upgrade dropped. At first I decided to wait a bit, before installing it. Well when I tried, it gave me some sort of error involving xscreensaver and xlockscreen, so I panicked and canceled it. I restarted the computer, very scared that I had ruined everything, but thankfully everything was fine, at first glance.

Later, I realized I'm on LTS anyways, and won't need a full upgrade till April 2025, which gave me relief. Things were looking up, but then I got a update notification about a "partial update". I used google to see what this was, and people mainly said to use the terminal to update. I did, and it downloaded like a LOT of stuff, some of which was mantic minotaur stuff it seemed.

So everything was still looking fine, but then I tried going to Preferences, Software Updater, and checking for updates, but here's the problem. It gets to "Checking for Updates" and does nothing after that. Its just stuck.

So I tried the terminal with "sudo apt-get install update-manager, and it gave me this:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable

I'm sorry for being so stupid, can someone please help me set software updater back to normal?

[ubuntu] Touchpad motion is also sending gamepad motion events

$

I'm running Ubuntu 24.04 with GNOME on Wayland.

In Godot games and in the Parsec Flatpak client, my touchpad mouse movement is also interpreted as gamepad stick movement. This makes the UI next-to-impossible to navigate, since focus scrolls wildly every time I move my mouse. This behaviour doesn't occur when I use a wired mouse. Only the touchpad so far as I'm able to tell. Does anyone know what the cause may be? I do not care for this functionality at all, ideally I can disable it somewhere. Because it happens in both Godot games and Parsec, I suspect it's a Ubuntu issue and not specific to those apps. I assume it's just that those are the only two apps I've come across that take gamepad input into account. I'm not really sure where to even start debugging

Here's output from running "libinput list-devices", I don't see anything out of the ordinary.

bcachefs

A new comer to filesytems bcachefs.

Features

Bcachefs is a copy-on-write (COW) file system for Linux-based operating systems.[3] Features include caching,[4] full file-system encryption using the ChaCha20 and Poly1305 algorithms,[5] native compression[4] via LZ4, gzip[6] and Zstandard,[7] snapshots,[4] CRC-32C and 64-bit checksumming.[3] It can span block devices, including in RAID configurations.[5]

Earlier versions of Bcachefs provided all the functionality of Bcache, a block-layer cache system for Linux, with which Bcachefs shares about 80% of its code.[8] As of December 2021, the block-layer cache functionality has been removed.[7]

On a data structure level, bcachefs uses B-trees like many other modern file systems, but with an unusually large node size defaulting to 256 KiB. These nodes are internally log-structured, forming a hybrid data structure, reducing the need for rewriting nodes on update.[9] Snapshots are not implemented by cloning a COW tree, but by adding a version number to filesystem objects.[10] The COW feature and the bucket allocator enables a RAID implementation which is claimed to not suffer from the write hole nor IO fragmentation.[7]
Stability.

Bcachefs describes itself as "working and stable, with a small community of users".[11] When discussing Linux 6.9-rc3 on April 7, 2024, Linus Torvalds touched on the stability of bcachefs, saying "if you thought bcachefs was stable already, I have a bridge to sell you".[12]

I like the last line by the Man himself....LOL

There is one show stopper ATM it will not load on grub/efi, it needs rEFInd or systemd-boot. That might confuse some, and call it bad names...lol.
Code:

inxi -p|grep fs
  ID-1: / size: 215.24 GiB used: 41.69 GiB (19.4%) fs: bcachefs dev: /dev/sdc3
  ID-2: /boot size: 1.9 GiB used: 369.3 MiB (19.0%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sdc2
  ID-3: /boot/efi size: 511 MiB used: 1.3 MiB (0.3%) fs: vfat dev: /dev/sdc1

Snapshots are fairly straight forward. The best part is they get stored in "/"
Code:

ls /snap1
bin  dev  home  lib64      mnt  proc  run  srv  tmp  var
boot  etc  lib  lost+found  opt  root  sbin  sys  usr

And they also can be removed with just the "rm or rm -rf" command.

Filesystem checks work like normal except syntax is different:
Code:

sudo bcachefs fsck /dev/sdb3
[sudo] password for me:
bcachefs (sdb3): check_alloc_info... done
bcachefs (sdb3): check_lrus... done
bcachefs (sdb3): check_btree_backpointers... done
bcachefs (sdb3): check_backpointers_to_extents... done

So I've been using this now for a few months and seems stable enough currently, but I'm not going to push it to a production machine just yet.

T420 does not sleep/awake properly (22.04.4)

Hello ,

i have installed Ubuntu 22.04 on a T420 with dual-graphics (Intel3000HD-Nvidia NVS 4200m)

the laptop has installed graphics driver fine and would function,
however, i went to "additional drivers" and changed from "nouveau" to "nvidia-390 (tested)" and let install things and after reboot everything seems to function well;

under "About" it shows "Graphics": NVS 4200m/PCIe/SSE2 NVS 4200m/PCIe/SSE2 twice the same entry with no mention of Intel HD 3000 anylonger, so can i suppose only Nvidia Driver is used?

the big issue is hhowever, that the laptop would not properly wake from sleep; it would somehow go into sleep it seems, but somehow remain warm;

when i open lid, the laptop would show black screen w/ error message:

Code:

Xhci_hcd 0000:05:00.0: cant' change power state from D3hot to D0 (config space inaccessible

it this behaviour fixable or should i revert to nouveau driver (and loose hence some GPU performance is suppose)

thank you very much.

cant login after cloning disk

Greetings,
i've cloned a Kubuntu Drive. Now i can only log into Kubuntu(on the new drive) if i use the virtual keyboard for the underscore in my Password.
After the first login this problem disappears. So if i lock my laptop and login again i can do that normally. If I reboot only with the virtual keyboard.
Any ideas?

Ubuntu-Studio 24.04 won't re-boot without significant coaxing

Greetings,

I recently installed Ubuntu-Studio 24.04 on my Lenovo Flex 7i bought last October, 2023, using an Ubuntu_Studio Live USB drive. (The computer had Win 11 on it originally, but when I installed Ubuntu-Studio, I had the installation wipe the drive.)

So my situation is odd. After installing 24.04, it works quite well, but I can’t boot it up a second time almost ever.
If I just ‘turn it on’ it won’t boot. (I presume this is obviously because I don’t know what I’m doing here yet, and that's why I’m asking for help. :-)

I did notice that if I hit certain keys, it would boot once in awhile. I tried to figure out a pattern, and realized that I should hit the left shift key numerous times when it first powers up, stopping when the screen backlight goes off.

Then almost as soon as the backlight goes off, if I then hit Fn + F2 several times before the screen backlight goes on again, the majority of the time, the computer will boot and act like a normal computer within ten seconds or so. How this works, or why it works, is beyond me, but at least I can still usually get into the machine easily.

I invoked LVM for partition management during the install, and downloaded extra codecs, and the drive is a 1TB SSD.

I downloaded, and ran boot-repair (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair) and got that printout and attached it below.

I thank you in advance for your help. I am very appreciative of getting into Linux after having been a computer user since the late seventies. It kind of makes this all new again, and I like that a lot.

Here's my Boot-Info_20240629_1728.txt link Boot-Info_20240629_1728.txt.

Thanks,
Don

Trouble after updating...

Hi.
About 8 of 10 updates done cause problems to my compfuser. Always delay as much as possible the very often pushes for updating as when set to automatic it is worse; hangs up processes without telling what is going on to the point of need to power-off.
Today, it was a small ~500KB download; seemed quick and simple, went for it. Corrupted a bunch of something in the hard drive, messed up the Whatsapp for Ubuntu, halted facebook marketplace, refusing to work.
Unable to access software 'stores' , now crappyly renamed 'snaps' for who knows what reason. First were programs, later software, then applications, now 'snaps' ](*,)

The only browser I use 'Brave' fully disappeared. Totally unaccessible. Never understood why does never show by clicking the 9 dots at bottom right. Another browser 'Web' did not respond.
Did not reboot-up. Had to do the terminal fsck -whatever that is usually fixes the corruptions- (But never tell it is done or how to reboot from there. Took a photograph I will try to attach later.
Attempted to update Whatsapp; found no way to update. Delete yes, install yes, but no update. And do not know if it is the same software I have or from a different source that will make things worse. If I delete and install again, do I risk losing whatever I had on it before ? No, I do not know. The browser resurrected itself after a lenghty fsck surgery.
Had Whatsapp for one year working well; now it kills all messages I try to send. What is the magic to understand what is going on ?

The once wonderful Ubuntu getting too elaborated ?
