[ubuntu] 19.10 Stuck in Login loop - amdgpu error

$

After upgrading to 19.10, I can't log in. I'm stuck in a login loop. I searched around and found some suggestions to change permissions on the .Xauthority file, but I don't have a .Xauthority file in my home directory.
I then tried running startx from the terminal and got:
Code:

amdgpu: module ABI major version (23) doesn't match the server's version (24)
I tried upgrading amdgpu, but it seems to be up to date. Any ideas?

[server] multipathd error ... sda: failed to get sgio uid: No such file or directory

$

Hi,
I'm running Ubuntu Server 20.04 ... it's not my first but I'm probably still more comfortable with *BSD. That said, I'm having a good time with it when I see my syslog is filling up with messages from multipathd...

Code:

Apr 26 16:10:29 ubuntu2004 multipathd[728]: sda: add missing path
Apr 26 16:10:29 ubuntu2004 multipathd[728]: sda: failed to get udev uid: Invalid argument
Apr 26 16:10:29 ubuntu2004 multipathd[728]: sda: failed to get sysfs uid: Invalid argument
Apr 26 16:10:29 ubuntu2004 multipathd[728]: sda: failed to get sgio uid: No such file or directory

This is happening every five seconds, and it's not only annoying, it's worrisome.

My server is a virtual machine on ESXi 6.7 ... and I gave it 50 GB of virtual disk at install and selected to use LVM.

Any hints on what this means and how to solve it? For example, what is sgio and what does it have to do with sda?

Here are a few more points that may be germane:

[ubuntu] Software has no search function

$

Hi!

Yesterday I installed the latest Ubuntu LTS 20.04 (I paid for it too, because I think Ubuntu is great for non-geeks like me.)

One thing: the Software program doesn't have a search function, not as far as I can see.

There are 3 tabs at the top: Explore Installed and Updates

I find no magnifying glass or search button.

Is this supposed to be like this??

[gnome] Problems With .desktop files

$

I am having problems with getting some applications to appear on my "Favourites" launcher. Neither of the applications below will appear as a launcher.

This one was automatically generated by the software and appears in /usr/share/applications

Code:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=Moneydance
Exec=/bin/sh "/opt/Moneydance/Moneydance"
Icon=/opt/Moneydance/.install4j/Moneydance.png

This one I made myself and appears in ~/.locla/share/applications

Code:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Weather
Comment= Weather
Exec=lowriter  /home/keith/database/Weather/Weather_Form.odt
Icon=/usr/share/icons/Yaru/48x48@2x/apps/org.gnome.Weather.png
Terminal=false

Can someone please tell me why gnome refuses to put these on the Favourites?
I am using Ubuntu 20.04

How do you modify Shutdown time?

$
0
0
I have one Ubuntu 20.04 system that when I initiate a shutdown from the menu and choose the "Power Off" option, the system takes exactly a minute to shutdown. I remember old versions of Ubuntu having a prompt that would come up and ask if you want to shutdown immediately or it counted down and did the shutdown. When I choose the Power Off option from the menu on this particular system, there are no signs it accepted the command and I can access the system for right at 1 minute and then it performs a shutdown.

To avoid the wait, I simply do a command line shutdown. I'd rather be able to use the built in command. This problem started in 18.04 LTS and persists in 20.04 LTS. I did not have the problem on this system in 16.04. I have four other Ubuntu systems and none of them have this issue. I have pretty much put up with this for a couple years now, but since this is my main system, it would be great to fix this.

I've hunted around for any errant settings in dconf-editor to no avail and I have hunted for any scripts that might exist. It's pretty much like I initiate the power-off and then i just return to the desktop for 60 seconds with no other options.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm a bit embarrassed because I have run Ubuntu since 6.04 and have always been able to work out all solutions, until now.

On and off appearances of black and purple screens of death

$

I've recently been able to do a successful install of 20.04 (\\:D/) after a previous failed attempt (dual boot with Windows 10). Now, there is this behaviour that occurs sometimes and not always. After going past the login screen, it sometimes stops at a black screen and nothing happens (the processor seems to run in full swing) and sometimes there is the purple screen that stays forever and other times, the desktop loads just fine. I understand that this is to do with the display server or the lack of installation of proprietary display driver. Ubuntu on Wayland does load the desktop but it cannot be used as it appears to be struck (processor in full swing again).

At times when the desktop does load successfully (xOrg), the 'Additional drivers' application says that there are no proprietary drivers installed but also does not make any recommendations. How am I to approach this problem? Experts, please suggest. The laptop configuration is as follows:

Make: HP Pavilion
Processor: Core i5 6200U @2.30 Ghz
RAM: 8 GB

(These specs are taken from Windows's dxdiag)
GPU: Intel HD Graphics 520
Total mem: 4143 MB
Display memory (VRAM): 128 MB
Shared memory: 4015 MB

ARM on AWS disappeared

Has anybody noticed, on AWS regions supporting the ARM architecture, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS no longer shows ARM as an option.

(a) Is this now discontinued?
(b) An older build is at [1]. But this hasn't been updated in ~6 months.

#  normal - Check to see if a new release is available.  If more than one new

#          the supported release that immediately succeeds the
#          currently-running release.
#  lts    - Check to see if a new LTS release is available.  The upgrader
#          will attempt to upgrade to the first LTS release available after

#          the currently-running release is not itself an LTS release the

Prompt=normal

Today is Apr 27th, 4 days into official final release. Getting:

Code:

sudo do-release-upgrade -c
Checking for a new Ubuntu release
No new release found.

Questions:

1. Is this normal that my system still does not get the upgrade prompt (4 days into release)?
2. Is the only way to use 20.04 now is to use the -d option?
3. Is the regular (normal, non-develop) upgrade is only available once the 20.04.1 point release is ready?

Failed to dual boot latest Windows 10 and Ubuntu 20 LTS on 2015 Macbook pro.

$

Are there anyone who can dual boot latest Windows 10 and Ubuntu 20 LTS on 2015 Macbook pro?

This is what I did:

1. Create a Windows 10 USB GPT stick.
2. Create a Ubuntu 20 GPT stick.
3. Boot with Windows 10 stick. Clean partition table, using diskpart. Install Windows 10 on 1st 100GB. (Windows 10 creates EFI and system partition before this 100GB automatically.)
4. Boot with Ubuntu 20 stick. Create 8GB swap in the end of the disk. Install Linux on the space left. Grub is the installed to the disk, not to a partition.

After installation, Ubuntu 20 can boot/load, while Windows 10 cannot boot/load.

I've done this multiple times to dual boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16 LTS (did not try Ubuntu 18 LTS) in the past. So I think my steps are correct.

On the other hand, I can dual boot Windows 10 and Fedora 31 with same steps. (But I don't like Fedora because it does not provide LTS version. Too much upgrade.)

Really stuck. Any suggestion? Thanks.

[ubuntu] Sources.list problem after 19.10 to 20.04 upgrade

On upgrading from Ubuntu 19.10 to 20.04 I am unable to use Software Updater, it says "Failed to download repository information, check internet connection." I've run sudo apt update in Terminal and get error messages like:

Code:

W: Target CNF (restricted/cnf/Commands-all) is configured multiple times in /etc/apt/sources.list:5 and /etc/apt/sources.list:6

It seems that another sources.list file is being used as there are references to other PPAs I use when running Software Updater. But there's just that file and sources.list.saved in /etc/apt/

My /etc/apt/sources.list contents are:

Where is this other file? What is happening? I've never seen this behaviour before, is it something to do with a change in the way Ubuntu deals with updates in 20.04 (as part of the move to Snap??).

Many thanks in advance for any help

[ubuntu_mate] rdiff-backup - filelist

I'm struggling with the filelist you can use with rdiff-backup. There is lots of information on the filelist including the man pages but where is it located? if in the terminal you type rdiff-backup --include-filelist dir1 dir2 then where is the filelist located that this command refers to? If you wrote a simple bash script (say script is located in /user/local/bin that looked something like:

Code:

#!/bin/bash
rdiff-backup --include-filelist --exclude ~/'**'  ~/ /media/username/backup

where is the filelist located?

[ubuntu] VLC Media Player has issues playing some VCDs

I am using VLC 3.0.4 on Ubuntu 18.04. There are no problems in playing DVDs. However, there is a strange problem in playing VCDs. If the movie is the first or the only feature in the CD, then VLC plays it without any issues. If the movie is preceded by trailers, then VLC plays only the trailers and not the movie. Anyone knows how to fix this?

Thanks

Hi folks,

So im back again after having issues wtih the backlit keyboard. however ive noticed some new issues with Ubuntu Linux on this laptop.

1. battery icon is delayed it detects when the charger is unplugged straight away but when you connect it it is delayed.
2. battery seems to die after shutdown but only with Linux it is fine with Windows 10 tho.
3. CPU Fan is very loud but temperatures are not high.

These are the issues i have come across so far.
Everything else seems to be fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Strugling with folder permission

Hi

I have ubuntu 18.04 installed in ec2 instance.

I have created a new user called subadmin and added the user in the www-data group.

Code:

sudo usermod -a -G www-data subadmin
and then

Code:

sudo chmod -R g+w /var/www/staging
The folder permission is

Code:

drwxrwxr-x+ 13 ubuntu www-data 4096 Apr 27 07:54 staging

And the file is

Code:

-rw-rw-r-- 1 ubuntu www-data 623 Apr 27 08:12 /var/www/staging/readme.md
This user can create/edit/delete a new file but can't modify any existing folder or file.

Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ubuntu 20.04 Will Not Load Past Boot Splash Screen

Hi All,

A bit newish to Ubuntu, I've dabbled with it a few times in the past and been using 18.04 for the past 6 months with great success,

However I upgraded (fresh install) to 20.04 and everything was fine during install and reboot. But after I rebooted again I cannot get past the boot splash screen unless I disable the splash screen, use nomodeset in grub or boot into safe mode.

I'm using and old Lenovo ThinkPad T460s with Intel® Core™ i7-6600U CPU @ 2.60GHz 12gb RAM with inbuilt graphics card using Mesa Intel® HD Graphics 520 (SKL GT2) drivers.

Any help would be much appreciated, I am a sucker for nice looking splash screens and don't really want to disable it permanently.

[ubuntu] trying to do a late upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04

I have been slack in updating and the Software & Updates no longer offers an update beyond my last update to 14.04.
I have tried a number of the suggestions on the Forum but they are all years old and I think assume that 16.04 is the latest update. I have tried various approaches but have gotten nowhere. It seems that at this stage, there is no easy way to update from 14.04 to any of the newer releases.
Any suggestions?

[xubuntu] Desktop lost

Xubuntu 20.04

I installed Cairo Dock (with Synaptic) and it just froze on my desktop. So, I uninstalled it.

It took with it my desktop. Left with just a black screen. No wallpaper available in settings and just a very basic 'x' for the mouse cursor. It does however have the top panel.

I tried to get it back for a couple of hours and then decided on a re-install.

I have a separate Home folder.

After a fresh install, the situation is the same, except that I have no mouse all (not even a hidden one).

I can not use terminal as it won't accept any characters that I type.

Everything is working fine in the live USB that I am using that to access the forum.

Is the new install picking up an old configuration?

Thanks!

[ubuntu] lvm raid0 logical volume inactive

$

I tested a disk partitioning scheme on Virtualbox using Ubuntu 18.04 before reinstalling my laptop. Hind sight now has taught me that I should've repeated the exercise with 20.04 when it came out rather than assuming 20.04 would be the same or better than 18.04 in this regard.

I'm trying to work out why an LV is recorded as inactive when booting (either post install or from a live USB stick). My hunch is that raid0 volumes aren't activated on boot for some weird reason, bug or more likely I'm missing a module that should be loaded by initramfs. I've used LVM for years, but never really played with the built in raid and cache features so I'm looking for advice on how best to troubleshoot this.

Some of the things I've looked at:
  • journalctl -b
    • Shows fsck timing out
    • Shows a 60 to 90 second boot delay due to this, even if the partition isn't root or home. Fix is to set noauto in fstab and do a lvchange -ay <vg/lv> && mount <mountpoint> in rc.local. Which only works for data mounts but not for something like /home.

  • inspect dmesg and /var/log/syslog
    • Haven't provided me with antyhing clear cut either above the boot journal

Some output:

After boot
